Don’t drop the ball- Ways to stay awake to see the ball drop on New Year’s Eve
We have all done it once or twice... we stay home to have a low-key New Year’s Eve, but we wind up falling asleep before the countdown. Why do we do this? We are not that old. Well, the reality is, it happens often, and a lot can do with the fact that New Years is that last Holiday and it is all finally winding down. Now we pride ourselves in helping you fall asleep, but because of the night owlish Holiday, we thought we would give you tips to stay up…at least till midnight.
Paint That Old Town Red…or Gold! Or Silver!
One way to make sure you stay up is to go out to a restaurant, bar, or a friend’s house. Any place open is going to have some sort of celebration, so you can bring in the New Year with close friends. JUST PLEASE… stay safe. Call a cab (they will be on high alert) or snag a DD. Just make sure you watch yourself on the road and, well, avoid roads as much as you can.
Play Host
If you are not up for going out on the last day of the year, then invite a few close friends to come over to celebrate with you. Having company over will encourage you to stay up and wait till midnight. You all can act as each other’s sleep patrol if you are tired. Play games, watch movies, and talk about the past years greatest moments. A fun game idea: Have a contest about who can make the best drink. You, as the host can be the judge, and have a bottle of wine or champagne to give to the winner. It will engage everyone and who doesn’t love to have drinks made for them?
Late Dinner
If you usually fall asleep early, try shifting your whole day back an hour or two. Sleep in, have breakfast and lunch late, and then have a late dinner as well. Shifting your whole day back will make you think it is earlier than it is and will hopefully help you to be conscious for the grand finale.
Family Activity
If it is just you and the family, make the most of the night while you try to keep each other awake. Make s’mores over the stove or BBQ and watch your favorite movies or play board games. A good game of Monopoly takes at least three ours which will kill some time. Make it a camp out in your living room and make forts out of blankets. The kids will love the idea of making forts and will be so excited about staying up late that they will likely keep you up.
The Last Resort
If all else fails, set your alarm on your phone for 11:50 pm. This way, go ahead and fall asleep. The alarm will be your backup do you can wake up to bring in the New Year and then go right back to Snoozeville. We recommend doing this no matter what because if you are not watching TV, you might miss the countdown as well. Setting an alarm can either wake you up from premature slumber, or remind you of the time if you are having too much fun.
Happy New Year everyone, and stay safe!
