What's Your Couple Sleeping Pattern?

We all know the saying, “men are from Mars, women are from Venus.” We realize that although we all may walk among each other on a daily basis, men and women seem to be living on two completely different planets… having two different languages, feelings, and outlooks. With these differences innate to men and women, it is only reasonable to assume we have different sleep patterns as well! And if you sleep with a partner of the opposite sex you know that differences can be very frustrating and annoying. Here are some tips to dealing with the unbalanced nature of men and women’s sleeping patterns.

1) Tick Tock, Tock Tick
Now if you and your man or woman, don’t seem to mesh well in your sleeping patterns, then don’t blame each other. Realize that it may just be a biological difference in the way men and women are wired. Men and women have two very different biological clocks that do NOT seem to tick in sync. This can in turn cause different problems in sleep. We don’t know how or why the difference in sleep occurs but women for instance are two-three more likely to suffer from insomnia according to WebMD and men are twice as likely to have sleep apnea which causes loud snoring and frequent disturbances in sleep. Bottom line is, our bodies are built different and therefore our sleep issues will differ.

2) Work out a plan
Now if your spouse is an early riser and you sleep in, then it might annoy you when the souse wakes up early to get dressed, disturbing your deep slumber. If you have a problem getting back to sleep when woken up, ask your partner to get ready in another room or bathroom that won’t disturb anyone. That way you are not awakened too early. Your partner can wake up as early as they please and you can get a few more hours of shut eye.

3) If there is a problem, fix it!!
Now it is obvious that one partner’s sleeping problem is almost just as much the other’s problem as well. Chances are if one of you is restless, the other one will be too. On the other hand, if the other person sleeps great through the tossing and turning of the other partner then resentment for the splendid slumber will build but which is NOT good. Therefore, if one of you is having trouble sleeping, see a doctor ASAP! It may be a problem that can be fixed through either medicine or consulting. It is just important you find out what it is and how to remedy the issue.

Although the specific differences of sleeping patterns between men and women may not be proven, we do sense a definite drift between the two sexes. So whether your man is a snorer or your woman is a night owl, follow these tips to ensure a happy union after dark.

Compatible Sleeping Positions

It’s February! The month of love! So in honor of you love birds (sorry to the lovely singles out there) we will donate this month to tips for sleeping with your partner. This week, we wanted to aid you in the ever-frustrating and often debilitating act of trying to find a compatible sleeping position. Holding each other while you gently fall asleep is great in theory, but as all of us who have attempted it before, we understand that it is not the fairy tale we perceive it to be. Sure, it starts off romantic, but then your partner wants to turn one way, and you want to turn the other, or when you finally fall asleep, your partner moves and wakes you up… the list goes on. What ends up happening is you each seek refuge at opposite end of the bed and most likely one of you will be robbed of the covers.

However, there are some tips and certain positions that can help you and your partner spend this romantic time spooning into morning; or at least keeping the romance.

Tip # 1: the modified spoon
Now spooning is a great way to feel close to your partner, but it is not the most comfortable position in the world. Often after a few minutes your limbs start falling asleep and in the summer months, it gets way too hot to keep up (hot as in temperature people, we keep it PG here). Now one way to keep the intimate romanticism, while maintaining feeling in your limbs, is to try a “modified” spooning position. What to do: the female, or smaller person (the little spoon), will lie on their stomach facing whichever way is more comfortable. Hands are elevated over head, for primal comfort. The other person (the big spoon), lies closely next to the little spoon putting their arm around their partner’s back, meeting with their hand. This way the couple can hold hands and they are still very close, without being suffocated. Your bodies will slightly overlap but both of you will have plenty of breathing room and your limbs will not be squished.

Tip #2 Separate but equal
Now at times, sleeping just needs to be done alone. As much as we all love snuggling, we also have times where we just want to sleep in our own space and not be touched. This is often an issue for new couples beginning to share a bed, because sleeping is so personal and private for so long, that making the transition to share it can be very difficult. If this is your issue, try sleeping face to face, but separate. This way you feel each other’s presence as you drift off into a deep sleep, however, you still have your own personal space. This also gives perfect opportunity to hold hands as you fall asleep which will increase romanticism.

Tip # 3 “Sometimes when we touch..”
Another way to sleep separate yet maintain intimacy, is to each find a satisfying and comfortable position. The romantic nitch is that you two find a place to sustain touch. What we mean is either have your backs, feet or hands touching each other. Feeling that the other person is there will provide the connection of intimacy while keeping comfort and a good night’s sleep.

We hope these tips can help you to get better sleep with your partner and maintain romanticism. The important thing to know is that comfort and sleep are very important and don’t be discouraged by you and your partner’s difference in sleeping styles. By experimenting different positions you will most definitely find one that works for you. However, better sleep leads to a happier you, and a happier you leads to a happier partner. ; )
